I Carabinieri, lo sbarco

alleato in Sicilia e l’Allied

La prima parte dell’articolo ricostruisce il convulso periodo in cui i Reali Carabinieri
contrastarono lo sbarco alleato in Sicilia, compiendo atti di eroismo portati all’estremo
sacrificio, insieme a numerosi militari delle altre Forze Armate italiane; nella seconda parte
invece è descritto il contributo fornito dai Carabinieri agli ordini del Tenente Colonnello
Charles Poletti, Capo dell’Ufficio Civile del Governo Militare Alleato (AMGOT); ufficiale
che amministrava la Sicilia prima che l’isola venisse riconsegnata, il giorno 11 febbraio del
1944, al legittimo Governo italiano del Maresciallo Badoglio. Con questa leale collabora-
zione anche i Carabinieri Reali contribuirono, in Sicilia, a restaurare la libertà per la rige-
nerata nazione italiana.

The first part of the article reconstructs the frantic time when the Royal Carabinieri fought against
the Allies’ landing in Sicily, performing acts of extreme heroism together with the soldiers of all the other STUDI MILITARI
Italian Armed Forces. In the second part of this essay, the attention is focused on the contribution of the
Carabinieri led by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Poletti, Head of the Civil Office of the Allied Military
Government (AMG). Lieutenant Colonel Poletti was in charge of the administration of Sicily right befo-
re the 11th of February 1944 when the Italian island has been handed back to the legitimate Italian
Government chaired by Chief Warrant Badoglio. Royal Carabinieri contributed efficiently in restoring
freedom in Sicily for the new Italian national framework born right after the end of the war.
