CARABINIERI NELLA VICENDA DEL
“TITANIC FERROVIARIO”

L’incidente ferroviario del 3 marzo 1944 a Balvano è caratterizzato da due aspetti
anti- tetici. Infatti, oltre ad essere il più grave della storia, è anche quello che la Storia meno
ricorda: i misteri sulle cause della morte di oltre seicento persone sono pari a quelli sul-
l’oblio della tragedia. Dalla volontaria distruzione in Italia di ogni documentazione sulla
vicenda si sono salvate sole le carte conservate dall’Arma dei Carabinieri.
Grazie alla recente scoperta degli atti dell’inchiesta svolta dalla Commissione Alleata
di Controllo, le ragioni dell’incidente e del suo tremendo (anche se non esattamente quan-
tificabile) bilancio sono finalmente chiare e documentate; alquanto contorte, anche se
emblematiche le ragioni della scarsa memoria collettiva.
Inammissibile e grave è la permanente circolazione di ricostruzioni inadeguate e
strumentali che mirano al virale più che alla verità.

Commission, the accident causes and its terrible (even if not exactly quantifiable) toll are finally clear and
documented. The reasons for the poor collective memory are somewhat convoluted, even if emblematic.
The permanent circulation of inadequate and instrumental reconstructions is unacceptable and
Severe, giving that they often aim at viral, rather than truth.
