I CARABINIERI NELLA RESISTENZA

La Resistenza in Piemonte, fra il settembre 1943 e l’aprile 1945, ebbe molti carabinieri
come protagonisti nell’organizzazione partigiana, nelle vicende oppositive alla RSI e alle
truppe tedesche occupanti. Dopo aver redatto e pubblicato varie ricerche sui temi resisten-
ziali fra Piemonte e Liguria, Sergio Favretto condensa e porta a sintesi in queste pagine il
contributo dell’Arma e dei suoi ex appartenenti nell’esperienza partigiana piemontese. Si ha
una sequenza nutrita e significativa di momenti, di fatti, di circostanze, di generosi carabinieri
giovani allievi o già ufficiali, di coraggiosi interventi e di molti caduti per la libertà.
Emergono figure poco note, si apprendono scelte non scontate, si ricostruiscono vicende
con evidenze inedite. Alcuni esempi. Lo scrittore Beppe Fenoglio ebbe Romano Scagliola
come compagno al liceo classico Govone; dopo aver militato come carabiniere, nel 1944
scelse la formazione partigiana della II Divisione Langhe e venne ucciso drammaticamente
ad Alba il 15 aprile 1945. Il maggiore Martino Veduti creò il SIP, una rete clandestina di infor-
mazioni in tutto il Piemonte, poi raccordatosi anche con il SOE inglese e l’OSS americano.

Between September 1943 and April 1945, the Resistance in Piedmont saw many Carabinieri as
key figures in the partisan movement, opposing the Italian Social Republic (RSI) and the occupying
German troops. After publishing various studies on Resistance efforts in Piedmont and Liguria, Sergio
Favretto condenses and synthesizes in these pages the significant contributions of the Carabinieri and its
former members to the Piedmontese Partisan experience. This work presents a rich tapestry of moments,
events, and circumstances, highlighting the bravery of the Carabinieri - from cadets to senior officers - and
their courageous interventions. Many of them sacrificed their lives for freedom. Lesser-known figures emer-
ge, unexpected choices are revealed, and events are reconstructed with new evidence. To mention a few exam-
ples, one of Beppe Fenoglio’s highschool classmates, Romano Scagliola, after having served as a
Carabiniere, joined the Partisan formation of the II Langhe Division in 1944 and was tragically killed
in Alba on April 15, 1945. Major Martino Veduti established the SIP (Servizio Informazioni
Politiche), a clandestine information network throughout Piedmont, which later connected with the British
SOE and the American OSS.
