On 28 june 2019, a brown bear (Ursus arctos L.) has been spotted in Verbano Cusio
Ossola province (VCO- North Italy) after almost 200 years since the extinction of
the species in that area; it has been the first recent report of the plantigrade in
Piemonte Region and North West italian Alps. The results of the genetic analysis
have confirmed the specimen identity: it is indicated as M29, a dispersing male from
Trentino -Central Alps- moving West, to Canton of Valais in Switzerland first, and
then to Italy in VCO province.
The return of the species determined three actions: Piemonte Region joined
PACOBACE (Interregional Action Plan for brown bear conservation In Central-
Eastern Alps); local public administrations prepared a technical document for
conservation and management of the species, and “Valgrande” National Park
Carabinieri Unit activated a monitoring sistematic protocol.
The results of the survey carried out since 2019 until today, have enabled the
acquisition of several data confirming the stable presence of the plantigrade in the
northern part of Valgrande National Park, the largest wilderness area of the Alps,
set between Lago Maggiore and Switzerland.

L
orso è un animale fuori dal comune, sotto ogni aspetto.
In ogni disciplina, scientifica, culturale, artistica, sociale o religiosa,
l’orso ha, da sempre, avuto un ruolo unico e distinto rispetto ad ogni
altra specie selvatica.
A partire dalle sue dimensioni, le maggiori tra i selvatici terrestri
dell’emisfero settentrionale, le sue capacità adattative, il ruolo ecologico, la
sua distribuzione a livello mondiale con un numero relativamente piccolo di
specie, sino ad arrivare alla sua presenza fortemente radicata
nell’immaginario umano, (dalle pitture rupestri ai cartoni animati), l’orso ha
avuto, da sempre, un ruolo indiscutibile, ruolo che è cresciuto e mutato al
mutare della storia dell’uomo stesso.
Ognuno di noi, da bambino, ha giocato con un orsacchiotto di peluche, ha
visto i cartoni di Yoghy e Bubu, o Napo Orso Capo e, per i più giovani, di
Winny the Pooh. È naturale chiedersi perché, tra gli innumerevoli animali,
