Quanto a Dubuc, all’inizio del 1799 Wellesley ne aveva chiesto conto al
generale norvegese Peter Anker (1744-1832), governatore di Tranquebar, il
quale gli aveva più o meno candidamente risposto il 26 gennaio che Dubuc non
era affatto al servizio di Tipu, ma un semplice ufficiale francese venuto a visi-
tare la famiglia che risiedeva da molti anni nella colonia danese .

In ogni modo l’antifona era stata compresa, e Dubuc se n’era andato con
la prima nave in partenza, salpata il 7 febbraio .

Ignoriamo su quale nave, se fossero con lui i due emissari di Tipu, gli altri
francesi e le famiglie, dove fossero diretti e se siano stati catturati degli inglesi.
Un anno dopo, però, lo troviamo a Pondichéry con la famiglia, titolare di un
magro sussidio mensile di 20 pagodas locali (128 scellini), corrispostogli dal
governo inglese probabilmente a titolo di prigioniero sulla parola e corrispon-
dente alle spettanze di un tenente di vascello (1,500 fr. annui) .

Senza contare i probabili rapporti con Mercier e col Dubuc che nell’Anno
IX (1800-1801) era creditore di un prestito all’amministrazione dell’Ile de
France . Stabilitosi ormai a Pondichéry, Dubuc passò al servizio del governo

britannico, che gli confermò la pensione anche dopo la pace di Amiens e con-
tinuò a corrisponderla alla vedova e poi alle tre orfane anche dopo la restaura-
zione .
