historically, in opposition to the other, has been one of the worst false notions
undermining the development of western society. It is not true at all that eco-
nomy and ecology are at odds with one another, but rather, on the other hand,
they represent growth achieved in an ecological way, that guarantees economic
prosperity that is fairer, more equal and more transparent. These are the facts.

So I would like to leave you with four or five watchwords. The first I have
already mentioned and that is “synergy”. The second is “trust”. I believe that
the work done by forces of law enforcement in recent years in the field of the
environment has inspired citizens with great trust and confidence. I have seen
this in the people living in the “terra dei fuochi” (a territory between the pro-
vince of Napoli and Caserta), where there is our friend General Sergio Costa,
and I am speaking of the work of the State Forestry Department. It was the
human face of the State that accompanied the citizens, that enabled us to keep
a potentially explosive social situation under control, because when children die
there is little to be rational about, and therefore thank you for the trust and con-
fidence that you have given to the citizens of this country.

Then there is the word “transparency”. When the Ecological Operations
Unit of the Carabinieri intervene, when the forces of the State Forestry
Department intervene, transparency is guaranteed, and I believe we are all glad
that we can count on this. Then “participation”, a fundamental theme. It is fun-
damental that citizens feel they participate. This active participation must not
be delegated. Each and every one of us can play an important role and even
choose to consume less or consume better. Ultimately employment is a funda-
mental part of an ecological revolution.

Then “Employment”, made up of clean work and the good use of wor-
king spaces, because it is not enough to close down a company linked to the
camorra, that space must be immediately used for a legal and sustainable alter-
native. Otherwise the damage done is two-fold, as the message circulates that
there is no alternative to the eco-mafie, to the mafie, to the camorra, to the cri-
minality present in the territory. This is our task. If we work as a team, I believe
that we can see our mission through to the end.
