I feel particularly proud of the fact that Italy succeeded in organising a
universal exhibition in such hard times as the ones we are experiencing, with an
impeccable level of security. Of course it could have also gone differently but,
fortunately, the whole event went the way we all wished it to go. All this became
possible thanks to the hard work of the Carabinieri Corps, of the State Forestry
Department and of all the other Police Forces who were acting in rather com-
plicated circumstances.
Similarly we all worked hard on the contents of the exhibition. With the
universal exhibition of Milan we created a context in which also the internatio-
nal community could work on the new objectives for the millennium. Such
objectives were approved in New York the following October and certainly hel-
ped the realisation of COP 21 (Conference of the Parties on climate changes).
Now I believe there is a new challenge following the track of this engagement.
I believe that agriculture and environmental geopolitics carry all the Italian
experience: what we are today, our history, the expertise we possess, the aware-
ness we have. All this in one single result which created the diplomacy of a
country and probably also contributes to the development of the diplomacy of
