Tackling Environmental Crime throUgh standardized Methodologies

Welcome address of Maurizio Martina
Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies

Good morning everybody and thank you. First of all, I wish to greet the
Commander General of the Carabinieri Corps, the State Forestry Department,
the staff of the Scuola Ufficiali (Officers’ Academy) and all of you who are here
today to share this meaningful appointment which, in my opinion, is a unique
opportunity to consider in depth the global scenario on which we all are asked
to act by working in one of the most interesting and challenging frontlines.

In this time I find it crucial that Italy develops more and more its leadership
and awareness, above all in the field of sustainability of the developmental stan-
dards, linking with the fundamental times that have something to do with the
relationship between individuals and environment. I believe that focussing on this
issue, in our current time and in particular in the heart of the Mediterranean as
we are, will make us all the real protagonists of a unique experience.

I refer also to such projects as TECUM (Tackling Environmental Crimes
through standardized approach Methodologies) and, in general, to the efforts
that are being made by the Carabinieri Corps, the State Forestry Department
and by all the other professionals in the field. This is a useful effort also in view
of a better definition for a profile of Europe that is still in search of a meaning.

I believe that, in addition to the due reflections we make, and in light of the
general economic European scenario, we can give a meaning to Europe by giving
more and more value to its profile, awareness, and experience that we all, in this
conference, are trying to develop. Previously, and in a precise manner, it was said:
by means of some instruments, Italy had the honour and the duty, above all last
year, to meet the international agenda. I can say, with no reserve whatsoever, that
we did with all the strength and awareness we could ever express.

I owe you all warm and heartfelt thanks for the huge amount of work we
did together for Expo Milano 2015, in all its aspects: security and organisation
in particular in such an exceptional context as a universal exhibition. In addition
I wish to mention its contents: we worked hard with the Carabinieri Corps and
with the State Forestry Department on the contents of that wide topic:
“Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

                                                                                       23
