the Univerde Foundation, Dr Bennati, Vice President of Lav, Dr Onufrio,
Chief Executive of Greenpeace Italy and the Honourable Procacci, Advisor to
the National Agency for Animal Protection.

      We also had an in-depth examination of issues relating to the land and the
forests, resources for the future, sustainable development, the role of techno-
logical innovation in environmental controls, the part played by the Agency for
the Protection of the Environment and the Institute for Environmental
Protection and Research, the ‘Green Economy’, and a sustainable global eco-
nomic model based predominantly on renewable resources and leading to the
reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the lowering of pollution levels,
including electromagnetic pollution.

      This was made possible by the contributions of Professor Maddalena,
Emeritus Vice President of the Constitutional Court, Professor Valentina,
joint winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize awarded to the Intergovernmental
Committee on Climate Change (IPCC), Dr Marchesi, President of AssoArpa,
Ingegnere De Bernardini, President of ISPRA, the Honourable Realacci,
President of the 8th Environment, Land and Public Works Commission of
the Chamber of Deputies, Senator Marinello, President of the 13th
Permanent Land and Environment Commission of the Senate, and the
Honourable Bratti, President of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry
investigating criminal activity connected to the management of waste and the
environmental crimes which are committed as part of this, who agreed to stay
for the entire conference.

      Today’s third panel considered the measures that can be taken, making use
of established procedures of international cooperation, to combat criminal
activity which can often be traced back to organised crime and is harmful to the
environment, including protected flora and fauna, as well as agriculture.

      We received confirmation of parliament’s commitment to these issues, a
commitment which has already produced the law on eco-crimes (law 22 May
2015, number 68), with the introduction, badly needed, of new types of crime
into the penal code, the doubling of the periods of limitation and the tighte-
ning of the penalties imposed for crimes already covered by the code. The
weaknesses of the legal framework and the crisis caused by the increased invol-
