great intensity the need to assume the concept of integral development if we
wish to preserve our shared home. This has been an encyclical of tremendous
impact, both in our own public and cultural debate and internationally.
The international signal, as far as we are concerned, was EXPO Milano.
Here, today, is Minister Martina who was responsible, on behalf of the
Government, for the event. Beyond the multitude of aspects that are of great
interest in a universal exhibition, it gave a message about the sustainability of
agriculture and food which will remain long after the EXPO finished. This is
the message Italy will carry forward in the coming years.
Finally, and certainly most important of all, there is the COP21 agree-
ment, reached in Paris and solemnly signed by 175 countries in New York some
weeks ago. Moments like these, like the COP21, are important results, a chal-
lenge for those, our diplomats, with Minister Galletti in the forefront, who wor-
ked on them. There have certainly been unexpected outcomes. We also need to
consider that these are only the first steps in a race against time in which the
Earth has no “plan B” because there exists no “planet B”. Therefore, either this
race against the clock achieves results or the consequences of climate change
