Tackling Environmental Crime throUgh standardized Methodologies

ronmental macro-phenomena which the police units specialising in this area are
working hard on the ground to stop. It reminds us, forcefully and incisively, of
things which are nothing less than crimes: the illegal trade in endangered flora
and fauna; illegal logging and the illegal trade in certain types of wood; forest
fires; the dumping and trafficking of waste; the pollution of waterways, the soil
and the air; poaching and illegal hunting; the mistreatment of animals.

I extend my thanks and admiration to those who, in such a short time and
so very effectively, conceived of and put together this exhibition which everyo-
ne, even those following us by video link, will have the opportunity to see.

With heart-felt thanks once again, to the Carabinieri of the Training
Corps and the Officer School, the organisers of the Conference, those who will
play a leading part in it, and all those attending, I pass you over now, for the
opening speeches, to the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and the
Environment, to whom, together with Ingegnere Cesare Patrone, I express the
thanks of everyone for accepting our invitation to make this Conference, by
their presence, even more prestigious and important.

And I express the same thanks to the Minister for Regional Affairs,
Enrico Costa, and the Minister for Public Administration, Marianna Madia,
who will speak this afternoon, thereby confirming their support for this insti-
tution and these issues.
