also aimed at the suppression of such crimes which is the area of our work in
which we usually collaborate with the judicial authorities and the Police.

A few figures to outline the dimensions of this system: as I have already
mentioned, there are about two thousand people, two hundred headquarters on
national territory and a structure definitely containing excellence. For this rea-
son, I would say that we are of great value to the public, in our support of
government, parliament and regional authority policies and in support of
technical acts and controls we carry out, with some significant numbers that I
will now quote: about one hundred thousand inspections with more than ten
million parameters, therefore physical, chemical and biological characteristics,
determined in one year, providing the support I mentioned before. It is, howe-
ver, a structure that, in terms of capacity for intervention and resources, main-
tains a “patchy” presence on national territory. Almost two years ago I organi-
zed, with my friend De Bernardinis, the twentieth anniversary of law 61/1994
(establishing the Agency system) and on that occasion we spoke of an Italy
with at least “three speeds” from the point of view of technical-scientific con-
trols of the environment, because there have been considerable delays, parti-
