take back this reflection on ethics, just as the Popes urges us to do in his
Encyclical. But what is ethics? Ethics is a method, is our daily questioning on
what is good and what is not good not just for us but also, and above all, for
the others. If we start again to reflect, question ourselves, cultivate the culture
of doubt which forces us to face problems with a free attitude, with a construc-
tive attitude projected towards the future, probably we will reach some good
results.

      We should start or start again to reflect on the issues related to sustaina-
bility and quality of the development. The first thing we must do is avoiding
the overlapping between the concept of growth and of development: of cour-
se even a monster can grow up, but when we think of a child’s growth, gene-
rally with think of a child who grows up and develops in a balanced way and
follows a natural development. In all these years we have thought of a constant
growth but have not considered a balanced growth. Often the growth which is
encouraged carries advantages to a few and disadvantages to many.

      The other topic that should be the focal point in our attention refers to
the consumption. In the last few years the issue of consumption has become a
