The Corps carries out its primary institutional mission of state police spe-
cialized in the defense of the Italian agro-forestry heritage, in the protection of
the environment, the landscape and the eco-system, through a multiplicity of
activities mainly attributable to the conservation of biodiversity, the prevention
and suppression of agro-industrial and environmental crime, the protection of
woods from fires and the safeguarding of the territory.

I intend to underline, in such a context, that a vision taking into account
the great wealth of knowledge and the specific, investigative working methods
of the State Forestry Department in the field of the reorganization process of
police forces responsible for the protection of the environment, would suggest
maintaining the majority of the specific functional and organizational characte-
ristics of the State Forestry Department, which must be expertly grafted into
the territorial offices of the Carabinieri and its functional organization, with the
aim of achieving a rationalization and enhancement of the efficiency of the
police forces assigned for that purpose.

Carrying out a merger in such a way would certainly enable our country
to have at its disposal a combination of investigative forces for the suppression
