Tackling Environmental Crime throUgh standardized Methodologies
in environmental conservation, that is good governance and law enforce-
ment.
The second element that will be provided during Assembly and which
provides a marked departure from previous such meetings, is the fact that there
will be a dedicated symposium on the financial sector and the role that the
financial community can play in shaping the shift from the legacy economy into
a greener and more sustainable economy, unleashing resources and determining
a major shift in green solutions through in-house investments. In this respect,
I would also like to pay a personal and organisational tribute to the Italian
government, in particular to the Minister of Environment, who has supported
this cultural evolution of thinking of the financial sector by launching a com-
mon project with UNEP towards a more sustainable financial sector ahead of
the G7 presidency in 2017. I believe this is an incredible sign of maturity and
novelty that environmental issues have reached, by the fact that we always want
to improve our relationship with other constituencies beyond the restricted
environment constituency that we are part of.
Let me conclude with one element and one reflection. The diagnostics
provided in all global assessments reflections are very clear in pointing to the
increasing risks for our planet. Yet, the solutions that real-life actors are provi-
ding are increasingly solid and increasingly available, be it from the technology
sector, from the industrial sector, from the financial sector indeed. Still, the
gaps we have to fill hopefully through these global processes and negotiations
are the gaps that decision makers have to fill: globally, through better interac-
tion and better framing of their cooperation agreements, and nationally, by
understanding that the costs of inaction are far greater than the costs of pre-
vention.
Thank you.
