ment path are indeed pointing to a very close and growing relationship between
human well-being and environment well-being and the healthy conditions of
our natural systems.
First of all, the landmark decision in 2015 was the adoption of the 2013
sustainable development agenda, which has framed two fundamental princi-
ples: the principle of universality and the principle of integration; the latter is
fundamental because it provides the evidence that no individual stream of poli-
cy work can succeed without the economic sphere, social sphere or environ-
ment sphere without the contribution from the other streams of work. This
integrated approach will definitely be a challenge for national governments
since national governments normally legislate and plan according to sectoral
approaches. Yet this challenge is more respondent to real-life situations than we
would like to think.
This integrated approach is the first incredible new feature of the 2030
Agenda and the second new feature is universality. The millennium development
goals were set out as a cooperation agreement: the affluent and rich North provi-
ding development assistance to the poor developing South. This narrative has dra-
