The Italian State Forestry Department, having provided in the past impor-
tant contributions to the main working groups (wildlife and pollution, in the lat-
ter case cooperating in the drafting of the manual on sampling published in
2014) is now in a prestigious position, sitting in the executive board of ECEC
(Environmental Compliance Executive Committee), a body that coordinates
working groups and liaises with the directorate general of INTERPOL on envi-
ronmental crimes. In addition EUROPOL has recently increased its own activity
in the field of environmental crime recognising its significance, and in 2011 has
set up ‘Envicrimenet’, an informal network aiming to exchange information and
good practice. Here as well the Italian State Forestry Department together with
the Carabinieri Corps have always been active and currently represent Italy in the
framework of the Steering Group: it must be noted that the two corps have
organised the only General Assembly to take place outside of its natural seat in
The Hague, on the occasion of the Milan EXPO. On that occasion we took
account of the EXPO theme: “feed the planet, energy for life”, an issue that is
very important for our converging efforts, and we also underlined how environ-
mental crimes are inextricably linked with food and agriculture security.
