Tackling Environmental Crime throUgh standardized Methodologies
nities for improvement. How can we improve our work? The most impor-
tant aspect I believe is the sharing of information, knowledge and best
practices. I believe a conference like this clearly applies our goals and
beliefs, something that does not happen too frequently, it is still on a very
small scale. It is not about using a channel, be it Interpol, Europol or
others, it is about giving us the information to make sure we really can
identify those organised crime groups and promptly react on an internatio-
nal level.
Therefore, I would like to call up on you to make sure that in all national
investigations there will always be an international angle, so please share them
with us or any other agency to make sure that we can also intervene. It is not
about creating a focal point at Europol, it is about getting this information
because if the information is available I would like to reassure you that we will
give it the right attention.
As far as recommendations are concerned, we should target the profits; to
combat organised crime, we should look at the flow of money so that we can
trace those individuals, beyond the various foot soldiers, who are ultimately
responsible for illegal activities.
We have to prioritise in certain areas: as said, in the future, we need to give
emerging phenomena like e-waste the right attention and at the same time we
have to improve our activities towards this.
Staff training is also important: by having such a rich knowledge within
member countries, such as Italy, I think it would be reasonable to look to you
and learn from your best practices and use your organisation to share this kind
of knowledge.
On the international work side and cooperation, as said, it is important to
work together with private partners too and involve NGOs to ensure that we
have the right skills delivered also to those officers in the field who are respon-
sible for such investigations.
As in the case of Italy, having a central unit or a multiagency cooperation
in this field is one of the best examples how to improve our real possibility to
fight this form of crime.
Finally, if you provide Europol with your information we are also able to
