At an international level, on behalf of our Commanding General, I repre-
sent the Carabinieri Corps at the Internal Security Committee of the Council
of European Union, for the discussion, at strategic level, of threats to the inter-
nal security of the European Union, in order to set up priorities for the so –
called EU policy cycle in the area of home affairs.
On a global scale, the Carabinieri projection is also important since it
entails an extensive participation in major international engagements aimed at
promoting and consolidating world peace under the United Nations, the NATO
and the European Union umbrella. In this regard the Carabinieri are at the fore-
front of efforts for law enforcement in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Somalia, Palestine,
Mali, Djibouti, Iraq and Lebanon through effective stability policing, technical
assistance and training services delivered in those crises areas to support the
reconstruction of local police forces and institutions. In addition, the Center of
Excellence for Stability Police Units of Vicenza, managed by the Carabinieri and
co-funded by the United States Department of State, serves as a hub for inter-
national peacekeeping training and doctrinal initiatives. The Center, which has
trained more than 9000 police officers from 98 countries, evolved from the 2004
