this connection between abuses and environmental destruction, we cannot grasp,
in my opinion, one of the most significant messages in the papal Encyclical.

Besides denouncing those who share the responsibility for the destruction
of the environment and often for violence and abuses, we are also looking for
forms of cooperation with those companies that instead decide to operate well,
and luckily there are some. This becomes however a very difficult objective if,
at the same time, we do not strike at the companies that profit from environ-
mental destruction importing, for instance, illegally sourced timber.

As an environmental organisation, we have cooperated with different
police forces and both with the Carabinieri and, for issues that we follow with
greater consistency, with the State Forestry Department, whose work we really
valued. Though we agree with the direction of the assessment by Pecoraro
Scanio, as an association, we don’t have a vision in which we prefer one insti-
tutional framework to another; however we think that the chosen solution
should be consistent with the aims to be pursued i.e. that in the environmental
field absolute priority should be given to the effectiveness of repressive measu-
res and to monitoring legality. I am afraid that certain political dynamics may
