When incidents occur at high altitudes, underwater or in waterways, mountaineering Carabinieri and scuba divers come into action.
Carabinieri skiers patrol ski slopes to ensure compliance with rules and regulations and to provide first aid during accidents. Carabinieri climbers, on the other hand, attempt interventions in dangerous situations along the perilous cliff sides of the Alps and Apennines. Both skiers and climbers are selected and trained at the Carabinieri Alpine Training Centre in Selva di Val Gardena.
Carabinieri serving in the Diving Centre in Genoa, and in the 6 Diving Units scattered around the country, perform water rescues and seabed searches. In addition, together with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and scientific research centres, they are responsible for the recovery of archaeological finds and the study of the protection of the marine environment.
