DALL’ARRESTO DI MUSSOLINI

ALLA SUA LIBERAZIONE

Alle ore 17:00 del 24 luglio 1943 il Gran Consiglio si aduna a Palazzo Venezia nella
sala del Pappagallo. Sono presenti le più alte e importanti gerarchie del fascismo ordinate
attorno al tavolo a ferro di cavallo presieduto dal duce. Alle 17:15 la riunione ha inizio; si
concluderà a notte inoltrata con l’approvazione dell’ordine del giorno di Dino Grandi che
di fatto destituisce Mussolini, sancisce la fine della dittatura e il crollo del regime fascista.
Il pomeriggio del 25 luglio, Mussolini si reca a villa Savoia. Alle ore 17:00 è ricevuto
da Vittorio Emanuele III che gli comunica di aver nominato al suo posto il maresciallo
Badoglio. Al termine del colloquio con il Re, ai piedi della scalinata di villa Savoia,
Mussolini trova ad attenderlo due ufficiali dei Carabinieri che lo arrestano. È l’istante in
cui entra in gioco l’Arma che diventerà protagonista di tutta l’epopea che si svilupperà nei
cinquanta giorni successivi, intercorrenti tra l’incontro con il Sovrano, l’arresto e la libera-
zione del duce sul Gran Sasso. E dunque, da quel fatidico 25 luglio al 12 settembre 1943 i
Carabinieri furono testimoni di uno dei passaggi storici più drammatici e cruciali per il
futuro dell’Italia.

At 17:00 on 24 July 1943, the Grand Council convened at Palazzo Venezia in the Sala del

seshoe-shaped table presided over by the Duce. The meeting began at 17:15 and it would end late into the
night with the approval of Dino Grandi’s agenda, which effectively dismissed Mussolini and marked the

end of the dictatorship and the downfall of the fascist regime. On the afternoon of 25 July, Mussolini
went to the Villa Savoia where, at 17:00, he was received by the King Vittorio Emanuele III who infor-
med him that Marshal Badoglio had been appointed in his place.
At the end of his audience with the King, at the foot of the steps of Villa Savoia, Mussolini found
two Carabinieri Officers waiting to arrest him. This is the moment the Carabinieri came into play. They
would become the protagonist of the whole epic that will unfold over the next fifty days, between the meeting
with the Sovereign, the arrest of the Duce and his subsequent liberation on Gran Sasso.
