Public health and environmental protection are issues to which the Carabinieri devote special attention, through the qualified activities of Comandi Carabinieri per la Tutela della Salute and dell' Ambiente, which operate with their own Nuclei - N.A.S. and N.O.E. - and in close cooperation with the Territorial organisation.
The Comando Carabinieri per la Tutela della Salute, with 3 Gruppi (Milan, Rome and Naples) and 37 Nuclei Antisofisticazione e Sanità, monitors the origin and preservation of food and drink products, the butchering of livestock and the trade of drugs for human and veterinary use. Particular attention is paid to contrasting sports-related doping and inspecting nursing homes and hospital premises to verify the possession of the necessary licenses.
On the environmental front, the Comando Carabinieri per la Tutela dell'Ambiente operates through 3 Gruppi (Rome, Naples and Treviso) and 29 Nuclei Operativi Ecologici. These use advanced satellite land-monitoring technology to contrast pollution, illicit buildings in protected areas and illegal toxic waste disposal. Supervising the waste cycle is also one of the unit's priorities, as the battle against environmental degradation directly contributes to public well-being.
