framework of the departments structured as follows:
- 5 Inter-Regional Commands commanded by Lieutenant Generals which
exercise overall control and coordination regarding regional
commands and ensure, through their organizations, technical,
logistic and administrative support in every detached department of
the Force under their jurisdiction even if they may form part of
other functional organizations;
- 19 Regional Commands commanded by Major and Brigadier Generals
who are responsible for the management of the personnel who
organize, coordinate and control the activities of the provincial
commands. They are situated in major towns of the administrative
region, except in Valle d'Aosta, where there is a Territorial
Department responsible for the whole region/province reporting to
the Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta Carabinieri Region;
- 102 Provincial Commands commanded by Colonels and Lieutenant
Colonels. They are responsible for an administrative province for
the direction, coordination and control of dependent departments
and are also responsible for the analysis and correlation of
operations and the fight against crime simultaneously carried out
by special departments;
- 10 Territorial Department Commands commanded by Lieutenant
Colonels and responsible for parts of the provinces of Milan, Rome,
Naples and Palermo. The Departments are used in order to divide the
functions of management, coordination and control of the Provincial
Commands. As previous stated there is also a territorial department
detached in Aosta which reports directly to the Piedmont and Valle
d'Aosta Carabinieri Region;
- 536 Group and Company Commands commanded by Lieutenant Colonels,
Majors and Captains and structured differently in accordance with
the operative importance of the territory. They organize activities
in a variable number of Lieutenancies and Stations and are equipped
to provide a 24 hour call out service and have the capability of
operating independently in local criminal activities;
- 1 Carabinieri Command commanded by a Captain responsible for the
territory of the town of Campione d'Italia;
- 19 Lieutenancies commanded by First and Second Lieutenants
responsible for a single densely populated town. They are able to
intervene 24 hours a day and have an autonomous judiciary policing
role being directly responsible for the territory and related
institutional activities. In Rome there is also the Piazza Venezia
Carabinieri Command reporting to a Lieutenant;
- 4653 Carabinieri Stations. Local Carabinieri stations which,
depending on their operational status are commanded by: Warrant
Officers deputizing as Public Security Officers, First and Second
Class Warrant Officers. They are directly responsible for the
control of the territory for one or more towns or part of a major
town and their related institutional activities.
Each station adopts different opening hours for the public, from 10
hours per day to 24 hours per day, depending on operational and
social circumstances.
A series of Support Operations form part of the territorial
organization including Carabinieri Group Calabria, Heliborne Hunter
Squadron, 7 Squadrons and Carabinieri Dog Handling Centre located
in Florence with 21 Units distributed throughout the national
territory.
Finally, 164 naval units controlling the coastline and internal
waterways with the assistance of the Carabinieri Scuba divers,
depending on the Carabinieri Scuba Centre in Genova and 6 outlying
units.
