CoESPU's participation in the "Gender Toolkit writing Team" and in the "Development Group on UN Standardized Training Curriculum on Investigating and Preventing Sexual and Gender Based Violence"

PictureThe final session of the UN Gender Toolkit seminar was held from the 21 to the 25 of September. This seminar concentrated on Police gender issues confronted by U.N. missions in the field. Among the contributing countries participants from Burundi, Liberia, Portugal, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and CoESPU finalized the documents that will be disseminated after the UN validation process.
The aim of the toolkit is to enhance the role played by women in the maintenance of international peace and security, Recently the UN Security Council has adopted four specific resolutions on women, peace and security: Resolution 1325 (2000), Resolution 1820 (2008), Resolution 1888 (2009) and Resolution 1889 (2009).
These resolutions enable peacekeeping missions to boost women's participation in:
- post-conflict decision-making processes
- prevention of sexual violence,
- protection of individuals, including women and girls.
Maj. Gareffi - CoESPU - attended the working group as well as the different but related initiatives. The "First meeting - Curriculum Development Group" was organized in the same context, from 28 of September to 3 of October, by the DPKO/OROLSI. The event demonstrated the UN's commitment on gender related subjects. The purpose of the Curriculum is to develop a UN Standardized Training on investigating and preventing Sexual Gender-based Violence providing a common approach to investigating SGBV by UN Police Officers deployed in the stability and peacekeeping operations. While the working group was ongoing in Minneapolis the 48th meeting of the International Association of Women Police was meeting.
